Webinar: How SMEs can use marketing & storytelling to grow brand awareness and drive sales
Key takeaways from my recent BIA Innovator Campus webinar
Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking with a brilliant group of entrepreneurs at BIA Innovator Campus, exploring one of my favourite topics, ‘how small and growing businesses can use storytelling and marketing to build brand awareness and drive real sales’.
So many early-stage founders and SMEs face the same challenge: they’re doing great work, but struggling to communicate it in a way that connects, converts, and stands out.
This session focused on teaching storytelling frameworks and the contexts in which they would be used, depending on your audience and goal. We then broke it down into simple, actionable steps.
1. Storytelling is your most powerful sales tool
People don’t buy products or services; they buy stories that mean something to them. Your brand story gives context, emotion, and purpose to what you do.
As a starting point we looked at how to define your brand narrative using three key questions:
What do you want to be known for?
Who are you speaking to?
What problem are you solving and why does it matter?
A clear, consistent story helps you move beyond selling features to creating connection and trust.
2. Simplicity builds consistency
Small businesses often feel they need to “do everything”- post daily, run ads, send newsletters, be everywhere. But growth comes from clarity and consistency, not constant activity.
The takeaway? Choose two or three key channels where your audience actually engages, and show up there well. Quality beats quantity every time.
3. Combine content and conversion
Good marketing storytelling doesn’t stop at awareness; it moves people to action. We explored how to connect storytelling with sales, using:
A clear call-to-action in every piece of content.
Email and social campaigns that guide customers from curiosity to conversion.
Case studies and testimonials as proof-driven storytelling.
4. Use marketing tools to save time, not add pressure
Many attendees said marketing felt overwhelming, and that’s completely normal. My advice: don’t try to be a marketer, think like one. Use templates, automation tools, and AI personalisation to make your efforts easier and more effective. Marketing should work for you, not against you.
The takeaway
Your story is already there, and nobody knows it better than you; it just needs to be told strategically. By combining creativity, clarity, and consistency, SMEs can turn their brand narrative into measurable growth.
A huge thank you to BIA Innovator Campus for inviting me to share this session, and to everyone who joined, asked questions, and shared their stories.
